Factory-built race car! This is 1 of only 12 currently documented all-steel, 11:1 compression Dodge 330 Max Wedges.
Purchased new in San Diego at Boulevard Dodge, it was originally ordered as a 1962 to be used as an everyday car, in the process the buyer checked the box for the Ramcharger high-performance package.
Production for the 1962 had already wrapped up before the order came through in early October of 1962 and the car that arrived is this very 1963 model with the 426 Max Wedge. Not quite the every day grocery getter. The car was taken to Pomona drag strip just two weeks after delivery in dead-stock condition and clocked 13.08 seconds at 108 mph.
It underwent a repaint and replacement of the factory 3" exhaust with factory dumps in 1985, but retains all original numbers matching driveline, metal, and interior.
Confirmed by Galen Govier and listed in his registry and in Daryl Davis's Max Wedge reference book and was even featured in Mopar Muscle magazine. Purchased out of a museum in Illinois in 2024 and brought back to California to live out its legendary life as an original California classic.
Some of the more intricate details:
Produced at the Hamtramck Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan, as confirmed by the VIN 6132111791, this Dodge 330 represents a pinnacle of factory-built race cars. The Hamtramck plant was a major production facility for high-performance Mopars, including the Dodge 330, which was part of Dodge's full-size car lineup.
The 426 Ramcharger Max Wedge, introduced in 1963, was engineered to dominate NHRA Super Stock drag racing, with its dual 4-barrel carburetors and cross-ram intake manifold. This car's 11.0:1 compression ratio was more street-friendly but still required high-octane fuel, offering a balance between race-ready performance and drivability.
The Fender Tag provides detailed insight into its original configuration:
A factory original 426 Ramcharger Max Wedge with the cross ram intake and dual quads! This behemoth speaks for itself! Completely stock in appearance with factory air cleaners and valve covers and is painted hemi Orange. It has its motor: correct dated and codes. The upswept high performance exhaust manifolds are functional and also look super cool. It has a factory style radiator and brake master cylinder that appear to be rebuilt. The firewall and fender wells appear to still have original paint and still looks great. The underside of the hood had some of the supports cut at the factory to accommodate the dual carb air cleaners. The original fender tag is present, the hidden numbers on the core support.
The no frills interior is said to be all original and is absolutely amazing in every respect! It is a heater delete and doesn't even have carpet. The front bench seat is still very comfortable and has great spring and cushion. There is a small tear on the driver side back that is about 1.5" long. It has front seat belts added. The rear seat looks like it's literally brand new but is original. The door panels are original and have just the right amount of patina to be believable. They are in great condition and look fantastic! The headliner looks near perfect! Honestly I can't believe it's not sagging or wrinkled any. The dashboard is in exceptional condition. There is a little knick below the amp meter. Again, just little hints of age here and there that verify its originality. The gauge instrumentation looks absolutely astounding! The steering column is all original. The steering wheel looks tremendous and does not have any cracks like many do. Only 45,800 miles on the odometer currently. It has a factory radio delete and super cool push button transmission. The vinyl floor covering has a great texture or feel and is in great shape besides one 4" crack on the driver side from getting in and out of the car. This interior has truly aged like a fine wine!
This car has an absolute street sleeper look if you don't pop the hood! Dark blue metallic paint with matching body colored 14" rims on reproduction BFGoodrich 4 ply tires set the aesthetic. All original rust free metal thanks to living in southern California. The doors open and close easily, like a brand new car. All the body panels are nicely lined up and the gaps are very consistent. Repainted only 1 time back in 1985 and it still looks great today. You can't beat the look of this grill! It's very shiny and presents extremely well. All the chrome trim and bumpers are in fantastic condition with a bright shine to them and have only a few minor surface swirls. The headlights and taillights are in remarkable condition. The glass appears to be original. It is very nice and clear but does have a few minor scratches here and there. Considering the age of this restoration the paint and body has held up extremely well and is in exceptional condition!
This is a very large trunk that has been preserved. The underside of the trunk lid looks great and has original stickers. The entire trunk compartment is rust free with nice looking paint pan and trunk walls in great condition. The full-size Goodyear spare tire is said to be original to this car. It also has its jack. It has a reproduction rubber mat. It's a time capsule!
The undercarriage still looks great too. The bottom is rust free original metal painted the same color as the body. It appears that regular maintenance has been completed as needed since then. All the steering and suspension components were removed during restoration then rebuilt or replaced and reinstalled. The brake system was totally rebuilt and it has four wheel drums all the way around. The exhaust system is so friggin cool! It came from the factory with dumps! It has a reproduction 3 inch exhaust system with a cross pipe and mufflers. Looking up at the very clean 426 max wedge motor you can read the correct casting #s. The correct 727 Torqueflite trans looks and performs great. The drive shaft has been painted black and the hardware looks great. The 8 3/4 Sure Grip rear end has original 3.91 gears.
